Excel can be an extremely powerful, simple to use, low cost method of data acquisition; when combined with the right measurement device. Most PCs at this point have a big part of what it takes to make this happen, Windows XP & Excel. The addition of a USB A-D, analog to digital converter (like the ROI-USB A-D) is a particularly great way to complete the system; as it doesn't even need a power supply!

There are a variety of Icon (graphic object) or VI (virtual instrument) based data acquisition software packages that you can use, as an alternative to using Excel, at much greater expense ($2K - $5K just for software). One of the main features of these packages is; that you can store readings in a text file that can be opened with Excel. Some of these packages even offer the feature of linking your data real time into Excel.

Should you run software that allows you to store in an Excel compatible file (to import into Excel later). Run software that allows you to link your data to Excel (when you  run the software and Excel at the same time), or read your data directly with Excel? In most applications it's not a hard choice.

More and more, it's becoming clear; that a measurement system needs to be flexible and easily modified. The real power of the sensor monitoring system is based on, how flexible the data acquisition software portion of the system is.

The most flexible application that the broadest range of users has access to is Microsoft Excel. Microsoft Excel when used with the right hardware and Excel add-in allows a user to perform live analysis of sensor data within the spreadsheet.

With Excel Macros and VBA it is possible to create charts and graphs that automatically update with data from your measurement. Bar charts, scatter plots, pie charts, all come alive with continuous temperature real time data added to them.

With ROI-USB A-D‘s & standard Thermistor Temperature Sensors; software applications such as UCONServer, WINWEDGE, & ROI-XL allow the user to create and extremely powerful data acquisition system.

A common question is, how to measure room temperature with a 0-10V measurement system. It actually is quite simple to do it using standard thermistor transmitter hardware.

http://www.robertoweninc.com/shop/hardware/conditioning/4-20ma/resistance/thermistor/roi-10kxma32115f.html has an operating range of 0 to 46 Deg C. It is compatible with an NTC 10K ohm air sensor such as http://www.robertoweninc.com/shop/hardware/sensors/bead.html the one we offer.

While the output of the transmitter is not 0-10Vdc, as it is 4-20mAdc device, it is usable with a 0-10Vdc input system if wired with a 500 ohm shunt resistor. The shunt resistor will provide a 2-10Vdc signal for 0-46 Deg C.

There are advantages of this method being used:
  1. No signal loss for long transmission distance of mA, that would be experienced (as would with a voltage signal). http://www.robertoweninc.com/applications/tech_note/transmitters.html

  2. Live zero signal shows if transmission loss such as cable damage, as value below 2Vdc indicate a fault. http://www.robertoweninc.com/applications/tech_note/live_zero.html

A schematic, showing how the transmitter would be connected, can be seen at http://www.robertoweninc.com/applications/hardware/conditioning/4-20ma/resistance/thermistor/roi-usb-xma.html using the method just discussed.

The same system can be reapplied for different temperature or voltage ranges, using the calculators
